KATHRINA, RITA, WILMA – THE FIERY HURRICANES

I have a few questions to the blogworld.

Why are all the Hurricanes named after women ?

Was it done by an all-women committee or an all-men committee ?

Was it done to enhance the image of the woman or otherwise ?

Boy-O-Boy. Are we going to see a few Hurricanes in the comment section. That would definitely make my return to blogging, literally with a loud bang.

  • Hell hath no fury than a woman scorned, it is said. Perhaps hurricanes represent the most destructive powers of women when unleashed? Just a thought. What do you say?
    PS: Welcome back, Hari! :)

  • Actually hurricaines are routinely named after men too -- well, they aren't really named after anyone in particular. At the beginning of every year one of the meteoroligal associations releases a list of names it will use for hurricaines that year -- how they choose, I don't know -- and then as they start showing up they assign a name from the list to them. It just happens that Rita and Katrina were two hurricaines that happened to cause significant, news-worthy destruction this year. Bad hurricaines happen every year.

  • vishal is right - hurricanes are named alternately male and female. there was this series of Charlie/Frances/Ivan last year that caused destruction if you recall. Right now after Z - they are naming them Alpha, Beta ..so on.

  • There cud be many reasons...

The term "weatherman" is still the same. Very few women get into the field...it is only now that we see women taking up the field...
And since these hurricanes were named by men...they probably choose the names of their wives or daughters. The second explaination is....perhaps...the word 'Hurricane' has a French origin where each word is attributed a gender. ON a lighter note...aren't women more destructive than men?

  • Woman is the representative of Shakti and man the representative of Shiva. Shakti is the active movement whether gentle or powerful, breeze or gale. So it's a psychological process.
