HARD HITTING FACTS – ATLEAST I BELIEVE SO
I received these comparisons through an e-mail. Could not resist posting it.
- Rains in new orleans due to hurricane Katrina - 18 inches.
Rains in mumbai (July 27th) - 37.1 inches - Population of new Orleans - 484,674
Population of Mumbai - 12,622,500 - Deaths in New orleans within 48 hours of Katrina - 100
Deaths in mumbai within 48hours of rain - 37 - Number of people to be evacuated in New Orleans - entire city
Number of people evacuated in Mumbai - 10,000 - Cases of shooting and violence in New Orleans - Countless
Cases of shooting and violence in Mumbai - NONE - Time taken for US army to reach New Orleans - 48hours
Time taken for Indian army and navy to reach Mumbai - 12hours - Status 48hours later at New orleans - still waiting for relief, army and Electricity
Status 48hours later at Mumbai - back on its feet and its business is as usual - USA...world's most developed nation
India...JUST A DEVELOPING NATION
I hope I did not get the last fact wrong???
If not, should I not be proud of being an INDIAN.
Let me reiterate here, that the credit for this does not go to the Government or the Politicians busy mud slinging in an already stinking city or the haplessly exposed administration or the politically affiliated NGOs. The credit beyond doubt goes to the resilient, selfless, never say die Mumbaiites who believe not only in letter but in spirit too that after all we Indians are one large family beyond all caste, creed and religion and that WE are the system, administration and machinery who need to perform. We did it in Tsunami and we have done it again now and believe me we can do it every time we are faced by adversities if only we are all together and believe in ourselves to be so.

That is the power of all the meditation and Tapas that has happened and may still be happening in the land of Mumba Devi!
By Swahilya Shambhavi, at 8:33 AM
Hi Hari, I agree that we are more resilient, but do give some credit to the government machinery and also the NGO's. Also the voluteers who pour in out of nowhere, be it Latur(earthquake), Tsunami, or Rains. What New Orleans is facing is major but not quite as big as the Tsunami. And considering the population density of Mumbai and NO, it is surprising that Mumbai could jump back to life so fast. It seems that US has planned more in terms of stopping such a thing from happening. But once such a calamity befalls, they are quite lost.In India we are more prepared for the aftermath, I think.God Bless All!

Hi Hari. Great post. Like I've been saying, I'm trying to post my thoughts on Katrina but unable to come up with the rightwords. But your simple, fact filled post says it all. Kudos to you! :)

New Orleans - much of the area below sea level
Mumbai - from sea level upto 15 m above
National pride - Enormous
Perspective about a natural disaster - Lacking
By Anonymous, at 3:35 PM
I don’t accept that the situation in US can be compared with what happened at Mumbai. New Orleans is below Sea Level, so Flooding is more long lasting and severe. We Indians are good at falsely convincing ourselves to be the best. And a devastating hurricane shouldn't be compared with a heavy rain...hahaha...sorry friend...

Sorry about the nasty comment posted in here by somebody whose name described him or her best. I thought it best to ignore it as countering it would mean throwing stone on the shit.

I still think we Indians are the most corrupt, selfish, self-centred and indifferent bunch of people on this planet. At the time of writing this post, it’s raining heavily in Mumbai and none of the senior ministers including the CM of Maharashtra are in Mumbai. They are busy in their home constituencies nurturing their vote banks. They are not answerable/accountable to the people of Mumbai. Like wise, when the Tsunami struck parts of Southern India on the 26th of December last year, how many of us cancelled the New Year celebrations just 5 days later. People had to bribe officials to get relief food/clothes, and also, trust me, the dead bodies of their relatives! Simply pathetic. No doubt that the American administration was very late in responding but atleast people won’t have to bribe officials to get their relatives dead bodies. Please post your opinions in the comments.

This is not to say that I condone corruption.
Corruption is there even in the richest countries in the World. In Western countries corruption does not affect common man. Bush has made billions of dollars by dealing with Saudi Arabia. Richest people in the World are in Gulf countries, which are Muslim countries with lot of religious observations and restrictions. All these filthy rich people are corrupt both financially and morally.
16. Tantrix Says:
Overall, comparing these two disasters is like comparing apples and oranges. It’s interesting, but serves no purpose and proves nothing.
Maybe the floods in Mumbai weren’t disasterous enough — but that doesn’t make it better handled than the floods in New Orleans.
Also, US is the big bully in the world today. Considering that Mr. Bush took over the command of two countries during his first reign as the President, I agree that the response time was slow and the help inadequate for such a powerful and decisive leader.
And let me just say that US is a country where small things are over-hyped and people need directions for everything. They need to know if the coffee they’re paying $3 for is hot (otherwise they’ll sue).. or they need to know that cigarettes that they pay $5 for are eventually gonna kill them (otherwise they’ll sue)..
It’s a whole country of kids who consider themselves victims.. victims of hot coffee, big macs, hurricanes, terrorists, iraq, iran, n. korea, and even themselves.
Even this New Orleans mess is no different… it’s blown way out of proportion.. They need to do only one thing.. take it in the stride and grow up..

Yes, I do agree with the editor about the corruption thats rampant in India. Thats why India after all these years is still a third world country.
To the fact that India has provided top brains to all major projects across the World, that has made the other countries richer & advance. Yet, India is still a third world nation.
If we remove all these corrupt politicians then I am sure that India will be the most advanced nation in the World.
But, as the proverb goes, ” Who will bell the cat?”.
President Bush has made USA a living hell for people, he sure has made his millions if not billions in these past four yrs of his presidency. The army took 4 days to respond to handle the post hurricane situations. But, Bush has thousands of troops in Iraq.. why?
There are many questions that will be unanswered.
Thanks,

This is not to say that I condone corruption.
Corruption is there even in the richest countries in the World. In Western countries corruption does not affect common man. Bush has made billions of dollars by dealing with Saudi Arabia. Richest people in the World are in Gulf countries, which are Muslim countries with lot of religious observations and restrictions. All these filthy rich people are corrupt both financially and morally.

Hello All,
Yes, I do agree with the editor about the corruption thats rampant in India.
Thanks,
Sushant.

I see stupid officials asking for bribe for every thing they do. They feel like it’s their daily first DUTY to as for bribe.

The police and the politicians, the administration and the bureaucrats may be corrupt in India. but the main point is this = Indians care for each other in times of distress. there is absolutely no feeling of dark or fair, black or white, hindu or muslim, sikh or christian. when any natural calamity strikes us, we all help out in any way possible. Indian society may be corrupt, but Indians are the best. I am proud to be an Indian in every sense of the word. more number of people died in America when the hurricane struck just because the effected people were blacks. Less people died here because the effected people were Indian. Not black or white, hindu or muslim or any other religion or race.

Well NO was not an important state to be honest though that sounds crude. If it was a state like New York or California the help would be there at twice the speed. So there is no comparision between New Orleans and Bombay.
Not to mention New Orleans was bowl shaped , so the floods had more of an impact.

I don’t accept that the situation in US can be compared with what happened at Mumbai. New Orleans is below Sea Level, so Flooding is more long lasting and severe. We Indians are good at falsely convincing ourselves to be the best. One of my friends above has gone to the extend to say that Caste and Creed does not make any difference. He must be blind and deaf or pretending to be. How many people in India die everyday on the name of Caste and Religion. Lets see the good things of other Nations and learn to appreciate. Lets accept our weaknesses and work to get rid of them.

Very long comments, I totally forgot where the main topic went. But good reading nevertheless.
The email shown in this post only confirms the known. Indians take pride without understanding issues at stake. New Orleans was a PR and Disaster management screw-up of the highest order. Bombay really was no different. Just that Indians are so used to things happening haphazardly and politicians playing blame game and sitting in the confines of their safe homes, such things are never apparent.
Did someone forget to mention the death count in Mumbai and New Orleans. Given the scale of disaster and issues in New Orleans, the number of deaths is less than a 1000. In Mumbai, where the email highlights how fast the response was and all, the death was around 2000 (documented). And this really is the crux of the matter. Value of life is really not a key factor in India. Given the blurgeoning population, what is 2000 people die is really the attitude.
Trying to figure out where the weather doctors went wrong and why parts of Mumbai were totally unaffected (the affluent portion obviously) while another was destroyed is important. Comparing Mumbai to New Orleans and getting a sense of false pride will ensure we stay in the veil of ignorance that has come to symbolise us.

Hmmm... Pride - not a good thing. Dignity - yes.
Pride - comparing Katrina and rain in Mumbai.
Dignity - sympathising and empathising with the victims of Katrina while trying our best to manage flood waters in Mumbai and keep the health and sanitations prim and proper.
Pride - To let humanitarians handle the crisis while the leader concentrates on being number one.
Dignity - knowing we are all the same yet different and unique. Knowing its pointless to prove a point. Knowing that number one and perfection are but political tools.
Pride - creating a problem and then solving it when no one can.
Dignity - understanding the problem.
We Indians - are we proud or are we a dignified race? I see dignity in the fact that majority of us Indians do not look down upon others with respect to Caste, Creed, Colour or Religion.
I see pointless pride in comparing Katrina and Mumbai.
Lets do waht we can to soothe and not fan the embers of petty pointless matters.
As a business teacher, I tell my students - Your Strength and your weakness should never be on your CV. If others know your strength they know where to work on to make you weak - if they know your weakness they know where to hit you so that it hurts more.
Haven't we learnt our history lessons well? Divide and rule. Very effective. What we have here is a division caused by Too Proud people and level headed ones who do not somehow seem to know how to make their proud fellow country men stop BOASTING. Honestly, lets pipe down and not be foolish and beat our own drums. If we are called third world country - Fine - as long as we know we can not just survive a Tsunami but LIVE to battle another if we must - if we know we as Indians can climb every mountain sail every sea ... That's enough. We dont need to get the approval of the world. Lets stand up with dignity and be able to not only empathize with our Mumbaiites but also with the New Orleans too ...
God Bless.
