HERE IS A TRUE INDIAN VOTER

It is the first time I have heard in my whole life a person introducing herself as an Indian Voter and that really kindled the patriotism within me and what made it most satisfying is the fact that she is one of the latest entrants to the blogging community. Appropriately she adds to the list of niche blogs with her blog dedicated to Politics. For more details visit her at : allaboutpolitics.blogspot.com

Now what is true Indian Voter and it is definitely not everybody who votes. There are two basic difference between a person voting in elections and a true Indian Voter. The first one being that nowadays people standing in queues and voting in elections often fall under the list of jobless, illiterates and some educated people who have nothing else to do, voting for a consideration or purpose other than electing a responsible person to the post and these people understand very little or nothing valuable about politics, political parties and the candidates whereas a true Indian Voter is one who takes an informed decision before voting and fully knows the consequences of electing the person he is voting for.

The second and more disheartening difference is that the very small percentage of the voters who are educated and politically enlightened feel it below their dignity and self esteem to disclose that they had stood in the queue at the polling booth and rightfully caste their vote. The feeling has somehow creeped in that voting in elections is something not meant for the educated and the literate class.Whereas a true Indian Voter takes pride in disclosing that he has rightfully exercised his franchise and contributed his or her bit in electing a responsible and dedicated candidate to manage the affairs of our country.

Now why I categorise this blogger “Indian Voter” among true Indian Voters is that not only she is quite well informed, keen follower and an unbiased analyzer of Indian politics, she also takes great pride in declaring herself as an “Indian Voter” rather than considering it a blemish to her dignity.

Sorry “Indian Voter”, for putting up a post on your blog without your permission, but I take so much pride in calling myself an Indian and respect others Indians doing so, that I just cannot prevent myself from expressing my feelings.

Sophia, do you mean to say that no one should be a commentator?

In cricketing parlance, take Harsha Boghle - he is a good commentator, he analyses the game very well including that of the star players. But it doesn't mean that he would have to play like Sachin or Murali.

I agree that talking is easy & executing is different, but as a citizen you have the right to talk, dissect & criticize.

    Hope you get the point.

  • Hari, you have pointed out a very sad aspect of Indian democracy. The middle class seldon venture out to vote. The voting day is reserved for movie watching or eating out or simply lazying around. This apathy is visible when wrong candidates are elected by merely distributing a bottle of Desi wine or a blanket!

  • hmmm, hari, i simply wish more Indians would become voters!
    look at the recent elections...

  • Hari,

I agree... but the thought which crosses my mind everytime i vote is - for every sincere vote the number of false/duplicate votes cast is sickening - so the question is irrespective of whether the voter is true Indian , are the politicians true gandhians:)

  • Hmmmm... Voting ... whether Indian, American or any 'ian' ... The truth remains - that we never take it seriously. And Politics is ... Politics. We are given one vote one time and the rest of our lives or five years to regret over that one vote one time whether we made it to the voting booth or not - That's the simple truth of it.

Is it cold ou there in India too ??? Spring is so late in coming out here in the UAE ...

  • When I was in India, I never had the inclination to even try to vote. Although it was partly because my name didnt appear in the voting registry for sometime, but even after it did, I really didnt bother - at that time of my life, I was more interested in getting ahead with my personal life and I had thought voting was a mere waste of time. Now if I look back and think about it, I dont quite feel alright with that fact. I see it a golden chance missed. No use repenting about it now, though! Hope the current and the future gen. take it more seriously.

  • Hi Reflex, I would be much glad if we become one ourselves.

  • Hi Indian Voter,
I put this up for two reasons. The first is to help non-voters draw inspiration from your title. The second reason is to make you accountable to those inspired Indian voters by making you continue as the True Indian Voter.

By Blogger hari, at 11:30 PM

  • Hi Sophia,
I am talking here about the true Indian Voter and not good Indian leader. A good Indian leader has to be a true Indian Voter, but a true Indian Voter need not necessarily be a leader, he only needs to choose a good leader. So let us not mix roles.

  • Hi Arjun,
    You got it right.

By Blogger hari, at 11:31 PM

  • Hi Alka,
I fully agree with you. People have lost confidence in elections and call it all a farce. But it is these very people who by not casting their vote contribute towards making elections a farce with only 40-45% polling being recorded and that too would include about 15% of bogus voting.

By Blogger hari, at 11:31 PM

  • Ramya,
Just …WISH…….. Is that the best we can do? Atleast the glam journo should think beyond.

By Blogger hari, at 11:31 PM

  • Hi Krithi,
What you are saying is like expecting a good result even without writing the exam. You cannot expect good governance when only about 30% of people vote in election (after deleting bogus voters). At who do you think constitute this 30% ? May be 28% would be ones enjoying some kind of material gains by mere voting.

By Blogger hari, at 11:32 PM

  • Hi Anu,
I have the same answer to you as Krithi. All these evils are a result of majority of people not exercising their right to vote. May be we all like only those rights linked with some material gains. Let us be selfless atleast once in five years.

By Blogger hari, at 11:32 PM

  • Hi Chandu,
I am very glad to have been able to inspire you. This way the Indian Voter would also be more accountable.

  • Hi Trouvaille,
I know it is a universal evil. But everything is subjected to change and I am an optimist.
Weather here is already very hot. In Chennai, we do not know the meaning of the Spring season as we know only summer and not so summer.
