BE MULTILINGUAL, EXERCISE YOUR BRAIN.

A recent research has established that people who speak more than one language on a routine basis tend to give a special exercise to their brains which delays the onset of dementia or loss of intellectual and memory power. Isn’t this a rewarding enough reason to learn more languages and interact with people from different geographical cross-sections.

Another logical inference is that if this conclusion is true, then Indians must be having the lowest rate of dementia as we speak so many languages within our country itself. But on the contrary as I see we Indians are born with dementia and short memory, otherwise how else can you describe the politicians being re-elected time and again despite the fools that they make of us and what to say of our intellectual power when we get sold out for free colour televisions.

May be India might well be an exception to this result.

  • Hari: attended a lecture by internationally renowned brain researcher/neuroscientist Dr. Ramachandran, who cited research that said meditation can actually help one cope better with brain ageing. So much for being Indian.
    Cheers!

  • Oh, I read the same article recently and was sufficiently impressed to blog about it as well! That's a great piece of news for those of us that are multilingual.

  • Namasthe Hari: You wrote A recent research has established that people who speak more than one language on a routine basis tend to give a special exercise to their brains which delays the onset of dementia or loss of intellectual and memory power.

What you wrote is true and that is one of the main reasons why all Indians and Chinese are doing extremely well in the west.

Believe it or not Hindu scriptures give utmost importance to the brain, whereas right from Egyptian civilization all other civilizations gave importance to the heart. In Egypt, when dead Pharaohs were entombed they always threw away the brain and kept the heart.

Vedanta Sutra states, "Happiness and unhappiness is in the brain."
