THE LIFE OF A MAN

A few days ago when I was reading through the Newspaper, I jumped on this interesting story of how the life of a man evolved. No Gender war intended please. The story goes like this :

One the day one of evolution, the God came to the earth and created the Cow. He blessed the cow with 60 years of life and instructed that all through its life it should serve the farmer by helping with his farming slogging in the sun and giving him milk required for his sustenance. The cow told God that 60 years is too much for this life of slavery and it requested God take back 40 years and allow it to live for 20 years serving the farmer. The God agreed to the request.

Next day the God created the Dog. He gave it 20 years of life and instructed that all through its life the dog should remain outside the house protecting its master and barking at strangers and thieves. The dog said spending 20 years of life barking is just too much and it requested the God to take back 10 years and the God agreed to the request of the Dog.

On day three the God created the Monkey, gave it 20 years of life and instructed that it should spend its life jumping and playing tricks entertaining people. The monkey felt 20 years of jumping and entertaining is sickening and it requested the God to take back 10 years as he did to the Dog and let the monkey do its act for just 10 years. The God agreed.

On day four, the God created the man, gave him 20 years of life and told him that all he needs to do is eat, play around, sleep and enjoy all the pleasures of life. The man immediately pleaded with God that 20 years is too less to enjoy his life fully and requested God to grant to him the remaining life of the Cow, Dog and the monkey also so that the man can live for 80 years. The God agreed and blessed the man to live for 80 years.

So accordingly the man lived his first 20 years of life eating, playing around, sleeping and enjoying all the worldly pleasures. The next 40 years he lived the cows life, that of a slave working hard roaming in the sun to take care of his family. The 10 years thereafter he lived like a monkey jumping and dancing entertaining his grandchildren. And he spent his last 10 years outside his own house like a watchdog barking his way to death.

Females bloggers, please do not mistake me to be a male chauvinist or overtly trying supporting the male fraternity through this post, in fact this story highlighted an important point favouring woman, that God created man before woman, so that woman can learn lessons from the man’s greediness and become more wise in their choice of life and what more, most of you seemed to have learnt the lessons well.

Ooops, I think I am in for a lot of thrashing………. But sorry gals, I was so much impressed by the interface between reality and the story that I could not resist posting it.

  • Hi Hari, I remember that story from long ago but I think that perhaps you took the term "man" literally :) I think the word "man" is used to mean "humankind" in general. If you ask me, the influence of chauvinism isnt in the story itself but in assuming that "man" means ONLY men and not women.

  • "most of you seemed to have learnt the lessons well" - really?

  • That was quite an entertaining story- and really, I am amazed and surprised at your ability to always come up with such wonderful thoughts for your posts. Keep it flowing, and we shall keep lapping it up!

  • Hi Shyam / Hi Ramya,

May be you both are right the "Man" in the story actually includes woman too. But I only thought of being impartial and highlight woman as more wise, but if you so choose to be included with the "Man" and be graded equally greedy, then the choice is yours. By the way Ramya, I miss your characteristic Cheers in the comment.

  • Hey Hari, I dunno about woman being any wiser... I mean, it's a proven fact that they live longer than men! ;-)

  • From what I understand, whatever your source for this nice snippet of blog be, man refers to humankind whereas Man refers to the male version of humankind. And while I want to refrain from gender remarks, there is one minor flaw in your argument that the female version is better since it was created later. If we agree to the notion that God created Man, then he knew what he expected out of him. Afterall, its God we are talking about here. He is the One who knows everything, past, present and future. With that in mind, he should and would have known how and what he wanted out of the Woman. No guessing or scope for improvement there since its all prior knowledge. Given that, I dont see him improving his second creation, once he saw the behavior of the first. But yes, your argument does mollify the ladies, I am sure :)
    Keep up the nice thoughts.

  • Long live Shyam. I did expect such strong comments from the females, but believe me Shyam the post was only written in a light vein without any intention to trigger a gender war.

But you see an interesting debate has arisen, may be due to the last two paragraphs, on whether I am supporting the males or females. There are females who tell it is supporting males and there is "the last blogger" who says I am supporting females. What is your judgement on that Shyam.

  • Hi Kaush,

Thanks for acknowledging my compliment, but look Shyam and Ramya see it differently. So the post itself seems to have an interface as it looks supporting male as well as females depending on the angle you wish to look at.

  • Hi Chakra,

You do not feel so Chakra ? Ask your wife and do you mean to say you are not living the life of a cow now, slogging for your family. You are really lucky.

  • Hi Deepak,

Thanks for your compliment. But I am afraid the post should not become a bit controversial.

  • Hi Last Blogger,

Definitely there is scope for improvement and by God himself. You would have seen it over generation of evolution of human kind. Do you not feel there is a vast improvement between the primitive man and the modern day man or woman for that matter. And even among modern day humans do you not see the good, bad and the ugly. God makes changes all the time, may be pre-decided, in order to maintain the equilibrium.

  • I agree with your reasoning but not with the "assumed" notion of religion that God is perfect and hence all his creations are too. So given these two arguments, one of them is faulty.
Nevertheless its a question of what a person's definition of "God" is and that'll lead to different interpretations of what "He/She" can do and is capable of.
