SWAMI, SAINT, GODMAN – A SWING IN DEFINITION
I read this article today that the Godman Chandraswami was acquitted from the St. Kitts case. The other day I see one of our respected saints commenting about the nomination of Ms. Sonia Gandhi as the Prime Minister. And nowadays we see saints, sanyasis, swamijis and swaminis trying to gain spotlight in all fronts other than spirituality.
I just wanted to check up whether the definition of these spiritual terms have changed over the period of time with liberalization and globalization of our society. From what I have learnt from my childhood days and what my elders and teachers have thought me, taking sanyas means renouncing all the worldly bonds, the passion for materialistic goals and virtually everything and seek the highest spiritual goal of uniting with the Supreme power. And as people used to climb the ladder of spirituality alienating themselves more and more from the worldly affairs, they were graded by the titles of swamijis, acharyas, rishis, brahmarishis etc.
But now the definition seems to have become diametrically opposite. A person who is a total broke or pauper, who has nothing or nobody in this world to call his own and is not even sure of his next meal takes up the spiritual path, because anyway he does not have anything to renounce and becomes a sanyasi. And there begins his quest for worldly matters. In the next few years from absolutely nobody behind him, we find atleast a thousand people crowding behind him wherever he goes, he would live in a palace like farmhouse supposedly called an “Ashram”, travel only by luxury cars and Airplanes, secured by black cat commandos, becomes the chief guest in all political, social and business gatherings and what not. Any worldly and material requirements that you can ask for is made available to the modern day spiritual leader.
I read from one of my fellow Chennai blogger (Ramya) that the “Pattu Pavadai” a traditional South Indian children wear has been re-invented and re-introduced as “Cinderella Pavadai” to suit the latest westernized Indian taste. Anyway that atleast helped in bringing back the tradition, so what if it is with a slight modification. But by changing the definition of the term "sanyas", thanks to the modern day spiritual leaders, are we not making a mockery of spirituality. I really fail to understand whether this change of definition would do us all any good at a time when foreigners are increasingly becoming more spiritual (in its earlier definition) in their thought and action so as to live in peace and tranquility.

>> taking sanyas means renouncing all the worldly bonds
hahaha... thats a good joke!
Chandraswami
Premananda
Yagava Munivar
Siva Sankar Baba
Kalki Bhagwan
'Kutti' Saamiyaar...
the list goes on and on.. There are scores of self appointed god men who make this "profession" proud! ;) Believe it or not, this is yet another business and you have got quite a lot of competitors.. you have got to have your own USP to succeed and there are lot of other swamijis who are successful but haven't hogged the limelight for right or wrong reasons.

People will continue to get cheated by these conmen."As Long as there are fools, intelligent people would continue to exist inorder to fool these people".Rational thinking is absolutely missing from the people's minds.
They fall easy prey to these conmen and ultimately surrender their life to these people inspite of the using their own brains to good purpose.

Why must we talk ill of saints/ god men whom we have not met in person, when we have not done anything at all for India?
One thing is definite, people seem more keen on ostracizing and passing judgmeents rather than personally contributing positively to the world. First start to care for others and help as many of these saints you prefer to hastily judge do, then reconsider your views; you will know whether you have been right or wrong.
As long as we only keep commenting without verifying the fact for ourselves, India has no chance for improvement.

Well for one you have never understood the concept of hinduism or its highest philosophy, the vendanta. Why do you people talk ? This just shows your ignorance. It is not required for one to wander in some remote forest to show saintly behaviour. This merely shows your ignorance. Wearing saffron robes or putting some nama does not befit one to become a spiritual guru or mahan. Secondly renunciation is not leaving everything and going to the forest. The highest form of renunication is to live in the midst of everything and still not be attached to it like how the lotus flower is not attached to water in the pond. But again there are so many bogus secularists like you who like to talk and do nothing else. You think westerners are great and following our vedas is stupidity. There are also many fools in this forum who comment about various spiritual leaders without even knowing about them. You talk ill about saibaba and siva shankar baba who are giants in their space and you compare them to chandraswami and premananda. Nobody can change you guys ... not even god ... I feel sorry for you

First thing is believe in God and also yourself, before doing anythink you have to think wheather it is right or wrong. In this commercial world even if Jesus/Mohammed/Buddha anyone takes birth again they will treat very bad more than the previous time. Only the few followers who are really connected with God they only come closer to their Guru's. For example Sai Baba, Jesus, Mohammed are not recommended by most of the people's when they live after their death only people's started following them. So it is very difficult to know who is the real saint or Guru. In my concern the people who are really lucky they only reaches to the real saints, Gurus, Mahans. If there is some good thing comes then the same time bad also comes thats like the God created this World. So most of us criticize the peoples but we really don't know we are really criticizing the person who is really a God Messenger.
